No we’re not talking about a nice refreshing Ice Cappuccino from Tim Horton’s but the the St. John’s Ice Caps. CBC has broken a story that it believes the St. John’s AHL team will be called the Ice Caps.
While the name Ice Caps does not represent the beverage from Timmy Ho’s it does represent a lot of tradition in St. John’s. To put it in perspective it would be like calling the new NHL team the Winnipeg Golden Jets. The St. John’s Caps us deep rooted in St. John’s history and is most recently a minor hockey team.
While the addition of the word Ice will give clarity between association with the Washington Capitals it should be noted that one of the rumoured names for Winnipeg’s NHL franchise was Manitoba Ice. Perhaps the original plan by True North was to call the Winnipeg team the Manitoba Ice and the AHL team the St. John’s Ice Caps to tie the two teams together?
Regardless it has been reported that the domain name www.stjohnsicecaps.com was registered to the same company that registered www.ahlisback.com so we can assure you that either the plan was originally call them the St. John’s Ice Caps and it has changed or they are currently planning on calling them that. If they do we vote for Tim Horton’s to be an official sponsor. Until we have confirmation we’ll have to still consider this a rumor but we’ll give it an 80% chance at being the truth.
UPDATE: 1:45 PM – We contacted Scott Brown at TNSE about the speculation on the name and he was unable to comment other then saying TNSE fully stood behind whatever name Danny Williams as St. John’s Sports and Entertainment decided on for a team name.
He had a very similar response for us previously when we had asked him if he could comment on if a rumored report about the Jets name was true or not a week before it was announced.
