While we wait the official announcement on the Winnipeg’s NHL team name which is suspected to the be the Jets, we’ll turn our attention for a moment to the new AHL affiliate that will play out of St. John’s this coming season. There has been quite a few names tossed around and we’ll go over each one we’ve come across with our thoughts on the probability that it’s picked as the final team name.
Much like the Winnipeg situation there has been some discussion if the team name will be the St. John ______ or the Newfoundland _______. One issue that was mentioned by a blogger was if you go with Newfoundland what’s next Newfoundland and Labrador ________?
So what do you think the AHL team in St. John’s should be called and if you have any of your own logo/jersey designs please submit them to us via the submit news/story section of the site.
This ties into the mining history but could have some negative connotations that might not be appreciated by the AHL when it comes to submitting the name. However from a marketing stand point the slogans could be golden. “You got Drilled”, “We’re gonna Drill Ya” etc. We’ll also rank this one a 5 out of 10
While it may sound funny at first I actually love this name, it suits an AHL team perfectly because it would be fun for children of all ages to say I’m going to the Scallywags game tonight. Logo possibilities alone would be quite interesting. We’ll also rank this one a 7 out of 10.
Since the big league club will most likely share a name with an NFL team (Jets or Falcons) there’s no reason why the minor league team can’t do the same thing and 1949 might have some symbolism with that area… like when it was founded so it’d be very fitting as well. I’m not sure I’m sold on it though so I’d have to say 6 out of 10.
Navigators is a name that really stuck out when I first heard it and ties in nicely with the nautical history of the east coast and you could easily have some fun with the logos. Would be easy to adopt the parent clubs colours which is why we’re ranking this one 8 out of 10.
There’s been a few variations of a historic name in St. John’s in the Caps. There’s fear that confusion with Washington could cause problems with leaving it as just “Caps” as it once was so it’s been suggested to call them the Ice Caps or White Caps to keep that history but give them more of a personal identity. We’ll give this one an 8 out of 10 as well.
Another great logo done up on the Facebook page and while Mariners is more all the maritimes it could be a good way to draw fans from nearby but some talk we’ve seen has been against this when there’s other options that are more specific to St. John’s. We feel this one is not the best but also not the worst suggested names out there so we’ll say 6 out of 10.
Some cool logo concepts out there but overall this name is not very good compared to other options available and runs into the same issues as the Mariners. We’ll give this one 4 out of 10.
There are really some great designs on the Facebook fan page and the Puffins one is one of my favorite there. It would be a unique name and the Atlantic Puffin frequents the area so it’s very fitting. While it may not get enough to be the choice in the end I think it’d be a great name, but matching colours with the big club could be difficult. We’ll rank it a 7 out of 10.
This name has been gaining some momentum and has some historical ties to the area logo work could be interesting and could potentially work with the color scheme of Red/White/Blue if those colours remain for the NHL team. We give this one a 5 out of 10
This one hasn’t been rumoured but figured I’d have some fun with it. So for this one we use the play on Labrador to make the mascot an actual Labrador dog. I’d rank this idea as a 1 out of 10 🙂 But here is my fun concept design for it to end on a fun note.
