Now that the name game is over it’s important to look back and see how we got here and why it took TNSE so long to settle on the name “Winnipeg Jets”
As we mentioned previously, the longer the name took the better the chances were that the team would be called the Jets and the simple reason for that is if TNSE wanted to call them the Jets from the start they would have.
I give full credit to TNSE however as they didn’t rush to go with one of the two names we suspect they originally had other then Jets. Manitoba Moose and Winnipeg/Manitoba Falcons. We strongly believe that at one point in time it was down to those two options but the public outcry for the Jets made them reconsider.
Partially from a fan loyalty part but also from a business side of things. One thing that became obvious was that each day TNSE waited to name the team they were losing out on royalty revenue from past Jets merchandise sales. The NHL stated they would give TNSE the copyright to the name for free so that was essentially like giving them money in an already established and highly equitable brand.
Think about it for a second if the team was called the Moose or the Falcons would you have stopped buying retro Jets gear? Maybe down the road but look how many fans in Minnesota still wear North Stars gear despite their team being the Wild. It would have been an ironic twist if we had a new team with a new name and our money thru retro merchandise sales went to the NHL which still owns our old team the Coyotes.
What became apparent to TNSE would have been just that, they would be loosing out on millions of dollars from selling the retro jerseys and merchandise, where as if they chose the Winnipeg Jets they could get the revenue from those sales along with that of the new jerseys which will have a completely different look then the old ones. I don’t see this being a Cleveland Browns situation where we have similar uniforms though if we do the concepts we came up here would fit that bill.
The new Winnipeg Jets will likely use a different colour scheme and more modern looking logo, but that is a compromise we’ll have to live with it. That will be the way TNSE makes this their own team a fresh start and it’s a compromise I can live with and feel that the millions (Population of Winnipeg is under a million but there’s fans scattered across the country) out there will be able to live with it too, because at the end of the day we just want to be able to scream “GO JETS GO” and now we won’t look like idiots if we do it at NHL games anymore.
