The Honeymoon is Over

During an interview with Randy Turner of the Winnipeg Free Press for our film JET FUEL, Randy said he looked forward to the day when the Jets would be treated like any other team again. Well Mr. Turner that day has clearly arrived as the Jets were booed on home ice for the first time tonight during a 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers.

The Jets returned from a successful road trip, their longest of the season with a 3-2-2 record. If we would have been told we could get 8 points out of a possible 14 before the trip most would have been happy; However because of the success on that trip fans are left with unrealistic expectations. This team is a young developing team that is learning a new system, adapting to a new city, a new coach and much much more.

After the game listening to TSN1290 the amount of callers that were calling for Noel’s head is ludicrous. If anyone honestly believes that Noel will be fired at any point this season they need to give their head a shake. Claude is going nowhere anytime soon. Byfuglien as much as he’s been struggling on defence is not getting moved to forward or another team anytime soon either. The Jets are what they are and it’s great to see that fans are ready to treat this team like they did back in the 90’s but one thing us Winnipeger’s have is our illusions and thinking that this team can make the playoffs let alone win the cup this year is just that an illusion.

Complaining about Wheeler not scoring a goal is justified but I’d much rather see fans complain that he’s coasting then not scoring. Little finally got a couple of goals the other day and even when he was struggling was moving his feet a mile a minute. Complain how Byfuglien doesn’t skate hard back after he gets beat not that he gets beat.

The point I’m trying to make here is for this team to become a contender the players need to make mistakes, they need to struggle and they need to learn to close out games. The fact is making mistakes are OK because they should be learning from them. What is unacceptable is not putting in the effort to recover from the mistakes. Now if we’re still making the same mistakes that we are making now during game 80 that’s a completely different story.

I urge you Jets fans to use some common sense, mistakes will be made and we shouldn’t jump down their throats unless they aren’t working hard. If they are dogging it on the ice then by all means rip away.
