November 21: 1995, Jets Drop Second Straight to Bruins

Josef Stumpel scored his first National Hockey League hat-trick and added an assist last night powering the Boston Bruins past the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 5-4 in a see-saw hockey game last night at the Gardens in Boston. Consistency was the problem for Winnipeg as there were parts of the game when it looked like they shouldn’t even be allowed to play in the same building as the Bruins, and parts where it looked like they may even be able to get the win. A strong third period including 20 shots was not enough though and thanks to a couple late goals the Bruins took home the win and sent Winnipeg back with a .500 record.

The first period was a terrific period of hockey, with only 8 whistles the period was played in only 29 minutes as the teams raced back and fourth each firing 11 shots in the other teams direction. The periods lone goal came with just over 5 minutes remaining when Teemu Selanne broke in on the off wing and fired short side, beating Bruins goaltender Scott Bailey high giving Winnipeg the 1-0 lead heading to the second. The early parts of the middle frame were very forgettable for Winnipeg. Boston flew out of the gates, tying the game just 3 and half minutes in on a Stephen Leach goal. The tying goals were followed quickly by Stumpels’ first and a power play marker by Raymond Bourque, putting Boston up 3-1. Terry Simpson followed up Bourques goal with a time out and gave his team a verbal lashing, laying into them after the poor start to the period.

The speech seemed to light a fire under the young Jets squad who came alive after the timeout. Under a minute later Ed Olczyk scored for Winnipeg after a beautiful feed from Selanne to close the gap to one. Winnipeg would tie it before the end of the period when Keith Tkachuk tipped in a shot from the point for a power play goal, tying the game with just over a minute left in the frame. The game looked to be going Winnipegs way after Keith Tkachuk finished off a 2-1 with Teemu Selanne, giving each a 3 point night, and putting the Jets up one. It was not to be on this night however as in one minute the whole game changed and josef Stumpel took over. Stumpel scored twice in a minute putting Boston ahead for good with only 3 minutes left.

Winnipegs next action comes tomorrow night in Ottawa.
