Over the last few days it’s been reported that True North Sports and Entertainment has trademarked Whiteout. Speculation began in a flurry that this would be the new name of the Winnipeg Jets.
Today TNSE released the new name for the NHLs return to Winnipeg, and much to the chagrin of Winnipeg fans, it’s not the Winnipeg Jets. In a strange twist of fate TNSE announced the team name will in fact be Winnipeg Whiteout.
“We feel it’s an appropriate compromise on the name,” Mark Chipman stated. “The Winnipeg Jets have a long and passionate history amongst the community and a long tradition of the whiteout. Heck, even Phoenix attempted the whiteout,” he continued.
“We think the name Winnipeg Whiteout lends itself nicely to the tradition of the Winnipeg Jets, and while not the original name the fans hoped for, we really do think it will play favorably to the fans.”
Expect to see new merchandise hit the shelf stores with the new name and logo within weeks. New jerseys, car flags, decals, tattoos and more will all be available by the end of June. “We need the cash-flow from merchandise sales,” David Thomson stated. “Just because we’ve exceeded our 13,000 season ticket sales in record time doesn’t mean we can take our foot off the gas,” he continued.
As had been reported from the outset, TNSE has been trying to come up with a new name. And while Gary Betman from the NHL has offered up the Jets name for a dollar, it’s been fairly clear from the outset that they would not select the Jets as the name of the NHLs return.
“We needed something new. Something exciting,” stated Scott Brown, director of corporate communication & hockey operations for TNSE. “Winnipeg Whiteout has that energy. That, something totally special. The Jets were an awesome franchise with an amazing fan base, but they left and became the Coyotes. Now it’s time to start new. Start something that will last a lifetime.”
“We’re here for a good time and a long time. The Whiteout will not only be an experience at every home game but it will Also be an amazing franchise that will win the Stanley Cup numerous times over the upcoming seasons. We’re excited to not only confirm the return of the NHL to Winnipeg, but happy to announce that it will be the home of the new Winnipeg White Out.”
What do you think. Well heck, wouldn’t the above be an amazing story?
Become an MVP with Winnipeg Whiteout and never miss a thing.
