This happens to be amongst the most popular phrases that a professional athlete says when winning a major title like the Super Bowl, World Series or the Stanley Cup. And while I’ve not won any of those, I’ve still won something significant. And this win helps to benefit many others as well.
A few months back the Hustler & Lawless show ran an online auction benefiting Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Winnipeg. They had some pretty cool prizes available. Things like a golf experience with H&L and Mark Chipman, Jets tickets, Bombers tickets and more. I’m sure they raised a ton of awareness and cash for the organization.
There was however one prize chance on the list that I was eager to snag – the chance to be a guest host with Hustler & Lawless – and that’s exactly what I’ve won.
This Saturday, I’ll be on the air with H&L live from the Exchange Restaurant at the MTS Centre for the pre-game show. You can tune in on TSN Radio 1290 – or online at tsn1290.ca if you’re not in Winnipeg – to hear my hosting debut. Being on radio is something I’ve given thought to a lot and now I get a chance to truly try it out.
My passion for the mic goes all the way back to 1996 when I first started as a DJ at Saints Roller rink. Anyone from Winnipeg will remember that place. I went on to DJ in clubs, socials and wedding receptions. Heck, I even DJ’d a NYE party at private elite golf club in the area – of which the name currently escapes me. I’ve always been told though that I have a great voice – a voice for radio – though I was also told recently that I’m too cute for radio, so I’ll take that as a good sign.
My passion for the microphone and production is partially what’s driven me to produce and co-host the Jets Hockey Podcast each week. We’ve recorded five official episodes so far and each one seems to be getting better. I saw this opportunity with H&L to really see the show from both sides of the mic; all the pre-planning, production and post-production work that will go in to the show. And when it was mentioned I should likely make it on a Jets game day, I jumped at it.
It’s shaping up to be a bit of a long day, but it will be fun. So far, this is what I’ve been sent on how my day will likely unfold.
1-2pm – Prep show notes & audio back at the station
3-5pm – Hustler & Lawless on TSN Radio 1290
5-6pm – Official Winnipeg Jets Pregame Show with Rick Ralph on TSN Radio 1290
6~9pm – Jets vs. Panthers on TSN Radio 1290
For about 30 minutes after the game – media availability for players and coaches
2 hours after the game – Official Winnipeg Jets Postgame Show with Rick Ralph on TSN Radio 1290
I’ve known about this for a few weeks, but until it was made more official, I didn’t want to get too excited. But now it’s official! I’m so excited and it’s getting very hard to hide it. I’ll be taking in the game versus the division leading Florida Panthers. It will be my first Jets game in over 15 years in Winnipeg, and my first ever in the Hangar – the MTS Centre. I’ll be way up in the rafters in the press box looking down over the ice and action with a great view. I’ll be sure to tweet what I can, snag some audio for the Jets podcast and have a great time.
So please, this Saturday, January 21 at 3:00pm Central Time, tune your radio to 1290 on the AM dial and listen to me, Hustler and Lawless chat Jets and all things sports. Go Jets Go!
And for the record, I’m not going to Disneyland…just yet.
