Believe a huge success

I had the honor of attending the last Believe in the Goal Super Skills Summer Show Down at the MTS Iceplex last night as Team Red led by player of the game Travis Hamonic of the New York Islanders defeated Jonathan Toews’ Team White by a score of 12-8.

The final score makes the game look like a blow out but that was hardly the case with Weise adding two late goals (the first into an empty net) to finish the game with a bang.

Red took a big lead after the first period leading 5-1. They continued that dominance into the skills showdown that saw Red’s Darren Helm as the fastest skater with a time of 13.68 and Red’s Travis Harmonic with the hardest shot at a crowd pleasing 101 mph. That’s about 2/3 the speed a jet fighter takes off at…not bad!

Then it was the breakaway challenge that saw the goalies shine stopping every shooter until Jonathan Toews pleased the crowd with two goals on three attempts. That left the pressure on Red’s Mike Richards who had to score all three to win. He quickly scored two dazzling goals but failed to get the winner leaving the shoot out as a draw.

The momentum had swung though as White stormed back and left the second period all tied up at 8, with the highlight being a minute stretch that saw Whites Jordan Tootoo scoring twice and adding an assist that brought the game to within one goal.

The third period would actually be a bit of a defensive standoff for the early minutes, before Red eventually took the lead and never looked back.

Team Red, captained by Cam Barker may have won the game but on this night there were no losers. In the sixth and final installment of this charity hockey game the Believe in the Goal foundation achieved their goal of raising over $300,000 towards building a cancer patient care room.

The foundation will continue to raise money for cancer patient care but it will do so through the golf tournament and other events such as our partnered WhiteOut Road Trip in October.

On top of the hockey game I was able to meet some really great people that volunteer for the foundation, and in a short time speaking with them you can see the passion and devotion they have to the cause.

Congratulations to our prize winners. Hope it was a great time?

For Marshall and I this cause rings close to home as we have lost grandparents to cancer and Marshall’s younger brother (my cousin) lost his fight at two years old. On Thursday night I learnt the unfortunate news that a close friend of mine was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

While the Summer Super Skills Show Down may be coming to an end, this proved to be a grim reminder that the fight is not over and money still needs to be raised to continue Todd Davison’s vision to help make things as comfortable as possible for cancer patients.

We are proud to be partnered with Believe in the Goal and we Believe that with your help we can make things better.

Thank you to all the players that donated their time and skills to make the event a success and thank you to the volunteers that work hard to put on the event. We look forward to seeing you all at our launch party at 4play Sports on Saturday, October 8 @ 11pm with all proceeds being donated to Believe in the Goal.
