It’s no secret that today True North Sports and Entertainment (TNSE) finally released the much anticipate logo of the new Winnipeg Jets. But what would the fans think of it? Twitter has been stirring with both praise and hatred for the new Jets logo.

Shortly after it was announced at 4:00 on Friday July 22, Marshall Stevenson, one of our co-founders, was on the air with the Hustler and Lawless show on SportsRadio 1290 in Winnipeg. If you missed it, here’s the recording. You’ll also find a transcript of the interview below.

Announcer: Now back to Hustler and Lawless on Sports Radio 1290

Hustler: What’s up everybody? If you’re just tuning in right now, your Winnipeg Jets have just released their logos, secondary logo, word mark. It’s all up on the…I’ll say this. It’s up on winnipegjets.com and in the last five minutes the entire site has been re-branded. Fuelled by Passion.

Host #2: Love it

H: And that is, I think that describes the team as well as the fan base here in ‘Peg City. We’re gonna be taking your calls for the next hour, right up until we speak to new Winnipeg Jets Assistant Coach Pascal Vincent. He was announced earlier today and it’s kinda taken a bit of a back seat because fans have been clamouring for this day for a long time. We finally have it. Let’s go to the phones. Marshall in Calgary has been waiting the longest. Marshall, welcome to Hustler and Lawless. Great to have your. What do you think?

Marshall: Just like you guys said, I’m in love with the shoulder patch and the word mark is absolutely awesome as well too. A little concerned about the fact that the silver, the white, the blue really kind of reminds me of the Tampa team and even to a certain extent, you know, the Maple Leafs as well.

#2: I’ll be reminded of the Tampa team, man. They won a Stanley Cup and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last year. Remind me of them all you want.

H: Hopefully on the ice, not necessarily with their attire, but I see what you mean. And I think, the more I look at it Marshall, I think that’s probably a major reason why they made a point of using that red maple leaf in every identity for the hockey club, because really having red, having that maple leaf is one thing that truly differentiates the colour scheme from what the Tampa Bay Lightning are using because they have blue, silver and a lot of black as well.

M: That is so true, but you’ve got to look at it as well. You know not only Canadians are super passionate one, about hockey also about their country – very patriotic. And Winnipeg fans too, like myself. I grew up in Winnipeg. It’s all about the Jets as well. So still having that ability to have that historic red, white and blue in there as well even though the red is totally a tertiary colour around that, still absolutely amazing. I think that they did a really good job with it.

H: They certainly did. There’s two version of the word mark as well. The original one you saw with the block blue as the main colour of the actual font Jets surrounded by a small white border with silver outlined. If you go to the winnipegjets.com website you’ll also see the inverse, if you will, where the main block of the font Jets is in white with the small blue outline with the same silver outline. A large thicker silver outline with the maple leaf right between the T and the S in Jets. Hey Marshall, quickly before we let you go, you’re out in Calgary. I take it you grew up here. How long you been out there for?

M: I move out here to Calgary back in 2000. Right when the Flames were actually getting, or there was talk about them moving away too. And I said no way, I’ve already lost one team, not about to lose another one. But you know what, I’m a red, white and blue guy through and through. Totally excited that the Jets are back and looking forward to taking in some games actually back in Winnipeg and on the road too.

H: Well sounds good. We’ve got a big trip for you Jets fans just tuning in right now. We’ve teamed up with Continental Travel, invading Phoenix, Arizona for the Coyotes home opener. Jets at Coyotes on October 15th. You can give Continental a call at (204) 989-8597 for all the details. We will be there for the Desert Invasion of the Winnipeg Jets coming to Phoenix. We’d love to have you there.

So what do you think? Do you agree with the statements that Marshall made? What about the logo itself? Let us know in the comments below.

Awesome! Good radio voice too, you ought to think about a podcast during the trip.
