The Jets made a minor trade today sending F Akim Aliu to the Calgary Flames in exchange for D John Negrin. Aliu started the season playing for the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL before being loaned to Abbotsford of the ECHL. He’s played the past 13 games for the Heat and obviously impressed the Flames brass enough to make a move for the often troubled prospect that character wise did not fit into the Jets plans.
In Negrin the Jets get a player that has had injuries plague his development and played in only 24 games last season. This year he has split time in Abbotsford of the AHL and Utah of the ECHL. He’s played 3 games with the Flames over his career and at 22, he’ll add more defensive depth to an organization already rich with it. Negrin became expendable after the Flames dealt F Brendan Morrison to the Chicago Blackhawks for D Brian Connelly who has since joined the Heat.
With top defensive prospects Paul Postma and Zach Redmond representing the IceCaps in the AHL All Star game tonight, one can’t help but wonder if the Jets might use some of their assets on defense to trade for some help up front.
