After a three game road trip that saw the Jets get wins in Detroit and Vancouver, Winnipeg returned home last night to face the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs played a high tempo hard hitting road game and beat the Jets 4-2.
The Jets came back to the Winnipeg arena after ending their road trip very successfully getting their first two wins away from home and beating some good teams. They came into last night hoping to build off that success but a hot goalie and 3 bad first period penalties put the Jets into an early hole that they could not climb out of. Just 53 seconds into the game Igor Korolev took an interference penalty and Doug Gilmore capitalized less than a minute later to put the visitors up one.
Korolev made up for his early penalty about 2 minutes later, feeding Alexei Zhamnov at the side of the net for his second of the year. However it was just not Korolevs games as he found himself in the box again when Toronto took the lead on a Dave Andreychuk tip from the slot that beat Khabibulin five hole. Toronto was not done however as they would add a third straight powerplay goal in the period this time with Jason Doig in the box, as Kenny Jonsson hammered a one-timer high blocker. Toronto extended their lead two minutes into the second as Benoit Hogue was given a clear breakaway after a great feed from Gilmore, and he buried one stick side. Winnipeg got one back when Zhamnov got his second of the game one timing Igor Korolevs feed past Felix Potvin. That was as close as the Jets would come however as despite firing 24 shots at the Leafs goaltender in the final two periods they got just one goal and lost 4-2.
Khabibulin made 30 saves for Winnipegbut still earned his first loss falling to 5-1. Felix Potvin was spectacular for Torontomake 32 saves and improving his record to 4-4-1. Winnipegwelcomes the Western conference leading Colorado Avalanche next on November 3rd.
